Almiral de la Font - Artisan Winery
We have travelled across the plains of Spain at the foothills of the Pyrenees and arrive at Almiral de la Font which is situated a few miles South of Barcelona.
This is our first visit to the Winery although we have stocked the two wines made here for a year. Paul the owner gave us a tour of the vineyard which is a small estate of only 5 hectares. The dwelling on the property is stunning and available to rent sleeping up to 18 people and until 2006 was the main revenue generator here. Paul was advised at this time that the Xarel’lo grapes growing on the estate are only found in this area and treated with care they make a lovely Cava and white wine.
It took a few years of careful viticulture for the grapes to be worth harvesting and the first vintage was 2008.
On arrival today we found that all the grapes had been picked with 80% being sent to the local co-operative and the finest grapes are kept for this year’s vintage. Picking was a little earlier than ideal but they have an unusual problem here, wild boar enjoy feasting on the grapes and then create even more damage by sleeping against the bushes!
