Nabygelegen Private Cellar
We promised ourselves a couple of days by the pool to relax - however we were told of couple of vineyards in the Wellington area which were worth visiting!
First visit to Bosman Vineyard where we were turned away at the tasting room door as hosting a private tasting for Sainsburys, Waitrose and Majestic - INSULT OR WHAT!!!!
Not deterred went to the 2nd recommendation which was 100% worth leaving the pool for.
Nabygelegen Private Cellar is a special place to visit.
James Mackenzie is typical of the down-to-earth winemaker, even though they were very busy with the harvest they opened the tasting room especially for us and we were not charged for the tasting. This gentle giant of a man, always accompanied by a horde of faithful dogs, bought the farm in 2000, with 17 hectares of vines that are mostly 40–70 years old. Rather than ripping them up and replanting – the usual trend here – he prefers to work with the old vines. James reckons he lives in paradise, with Nabygelegen protected by the craggy snow-topped mountains and his home looking out on an idyllic lake, perfect for tasting wines at sunset.
After purchasing a couple of bottles which we duly tasted at supper that evening, we hope to soon be stocking Nabygelegen wines at carte-du-vin.
