Star Hill Estate - Tradouw Highlands
We met Grant the owner here and had a lovely lunch with him and his family at their Farm Stall where if you are in the area is the place to taste the whole range of Star Hill wines. After lunch Grant took us on a tour of the vines.
The Tradouw Highlands is a flat plain, some 750m above sea level on the northern side of the Langeberg Mountains. The plains drop off to the lower and hotter valleys and form the sources of three major river systems – the Goedgeloof River which flows into Poortjieskloof Dam, the Tradouw River which flows towards Barrydale and the Kalkoenshoek River which flows into Sanbona Game Reserve. To the north and west lies the great open expanses of the vast Great Karoo.
The wind cools the plains making the area perfect for grapes, the effect is growing conditions where the canopy surrounding the grapes is protected from the harsh dry conditions and the sugar levels in the grapes remain ideal for wine production.
