Day 14 - A Vineyard with wines named after cattle?

Wines that moooove you!

Spijker Malbec and bull!

Where do we find our new wineries from?

The answer to this question isn't easily answered but it is often from recommendations from contacts and this is how we heard about Spijker Bessie Wyne in fact two separate people told us about this winery.

A quick call to Annelie the winemaker and we were brought 3 bottles of wine to sample. All the wines are named after the cows on her farm.

1 - Spijker Malbec - Spijker is named after the “stoetbul” (stud bull) of the late iconic South African wine celebrity Francis “Duimpie” Bayly. Duimpie. Annelie gave one of the first bottles made of Spijker Malbec to Duimpie he was very honoured and it does mean that Duimpie’s legend, as well as that of his bull Spijker, will now live on!

2 - Bessie Sauvignon Blanc - No bull can live on its own, and when it was decided that Spijker needed a partner, the first name that came to mind was Bessie, She is well-known for her calf-producing abilities! Sauvignon Blanc is one of the winemaker's favourite white grape varieties, she has sourced the grapes from the Bottelary Hills and has made a brilliant example of South African Sauvignon Blanc.

3 - Börls Cap Classique - The newest addition to the Spijker stud, Börls, is the result of a bubbling romance with his beloved Bessie. This MCC is a blend of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Pinot Meunier all very traditional grapes used when making Champagne. A lovely wine and the first vintage has already sold out!

What a great recommendation - this label is so much fun but also the wines are brilliant and now being recognised as a quality brand they have won many Gold Awards in 2022.

We are going to stock these wines in the UK and hopefully, they will be on the shelves by early June.
