Day 9 - A Vineyard in Hemel en Aarde Valley

Saturday morning and a new vineyard to visit.

We leave Robertson and make our way to the Hemel en Aarde valley - to meet Tim and Vaughan at 7 Springs winery. Leaving Caledon they are the first winery you come to in this prestigious valley.

This is an entirely new contact to us. Finding little gems like this makes our job so rewarding. Visiting new vineyards and tasting the same varieties of wine each winemaker seems to add a slightly different flavour to the same grapes - of course, it is also great to meet new people.

Tim and Vaughan have been at this winery since the early 2000s and have learnt their trade as they have progressed. Firstly planting all the vines and now producing 6 different wines.

They are an English couple who are passionate about making wine. They live part of the year in England - so they are dependent on the team here at the vineyard. Whitney is their Girl Friday, and the farm would not run without her.

7 Springs is a relatively small farm nestling between Shaw's Mountain Pass to the north and Teslaardsal Mountains to the south. The oceanic influence from the Southern Atlantic gives the vines the potential to produce exceptional grapes by naturally lengthening ripening times.

We were lucky today to have lunch and taste the whole range of wines with the Pearsons and Whitney in the tasting area. The vibes I get from today is that the vines, wines produced and staff are very important to the owners. This care is shown in the quality of the wine produced.

2 bottles are packed for us to take and sample - we will do some food and wine pairing during our time here and then decide if 7 Springs will be added to our list!
