1 Place to stay 1 Restaurant

Updated: Sep 5, 2022

We leave Franschhoek today as we have several appointments in the Robertson area.

Up and over the Franschhoek pass with views to die for and we eventually make our way past Theewaterskloof Dam - the level of the water is high which is so good to see as in 2019 there was a severe drought in the area and water supplies were being threatened in the big cities.

1 Restaurant at Stettyn Winery

Stettyn can be found about 7 miles from Villiersdorp on the R43. The winery is situated on a vast plain with beautiful views on two sides of the Klein Drakenstein Mountains.

We have been here a couple of times before and pull off the road in need of

a coffee and perhaps a wine tasting. Since we were here last the restaurant area has been completely refurbished and is a lovely place to sit and relax.

Gabriel served us - he was very helpful as we wanted to chill for a bit with a coffee and enjoy the ambience. Coffee was served and he was great and popped back now and then to check all was OK with us. We must have stayed for at least 2 hours. So - 2 coffees, 2 glasses of wine, and a mixed platter later we reluctantly got back into the car to travel onto Robertson.

1 Place to stay – Gubas de Hoek

Meet, eat, sleep is their logo here.

This guesthouse is situated near the centre of Robertson itself and it was a great place for us to stay and relax before tomorrow when we start our visits to the neighbouring vineyards.

On arrival, we were shown to our room which was situated behind a large tree. My grandson thought we were sleeping in a tree - he was very jealous and wanted to be with us! The room was very comfy but if you have mobility problems ask for a downstairs room as the steps up could be a bit challenging!

The proprietor and staff are great here - nothing is too much trouble and the G and T served to us by the pool in the sun hit the spot perfectly.

We are staying 2 nights here and for our first evening we have decided to eat in - this was a special evening as the rest of the guests were here to celebrate a 50th birthday. They were very kind letting us gatecrash their special evening - the guesthouse had arranged for a local band to come in and play for the birthday so we also enjoyed hearing them perform.

Great night’s sleep in an enormous bed and down to breakfast feeling rested. This meal can be disappointing but not here - freshly squeezed juice, plenty of coffee, fresh fruit, yoghurt, granola, and eggs cooked any way you want with bacon mushrooms etc. etc.

Thank you everyone at Gubas de Hoek.
