Day 7 - A Vineyard with hand crafted wines

Today we have an appointment to meet with a Lourens van der Westhuizen and Marius at Arendsig Handcrafted Wines.

Again we have stocked wines from this vineyard since 2012. Over the years the winery has evolved. They have built a tasting room adjoining the cellar and another building with a Stoop overlooking the vines and the Breede River where they host food and wine pairing evenings.

Lourens never stands still - we have new wines to sample here today - namely Viognier and Merlot. Such a talented winemaker - in fact, the Viognier is already sold out! But we have the Merlot to take away, taste alongside other potential candidates and see how it might fit into our list!

Like everywhere, since Covid things haven’t been easy - the war also has had its impact and here the cost of living has risen. Despite this local wine sales are holding up and they are also grateful that our UK customers are still enjoying their wines as overseas sales are all important to the survival of these boutique wineries.

We are looking to have a virtual tasting with Arendsig during the summer, please let us know if you would be interested in joining. Lourens will be ready to tell you about his wines and answer any questions you may have about the wine-making industry in South Africa.

Full details of the Arendsig wines can be found here.
